Why Spiced Wine?
Did you know that “wine during pregnancy” and “what kind of wine can I drink while pregnant” are super popular Google searches? You gals really miss your wine!
I remember catching wind that doctors had OK’d drinking wine in pregnancy due to certain benefits a while back, but I know that many moms are very skeptical of it. Well I’m not here to tell you whether or not you can drink wine during pregnancy. I’m here to give you what you want, in the best way; that means giving you a non alcoholic version. Have you seen non alcoholic wine before? It’s a thing, but I’ve never seen it in a store (probably because I wasn’t looking for it). If you’re interested, just Google non alcoholic wine and you’ll find where to buy non alcoholic wine.
Spiced wine is also a thing; commonly known as mulled wine. For this mulled wine recipe hack I used alcoholic wine and burned off the alcohol. Did you know that you can cook the alcohol out of wine? It takes no skill at all. I stumbled upon it when I was poaching pears and decided to drink the liquid after. Since you guys sometimes get tired of the same drinks, I wanted to give you this cool, alternative spiced wine, AND it’s perfect timing since the weather is getting cooler.

The recipe calls for spices and not fresh ingredients because I think they gave it better flavor. The down side to this is that the spices settle at the bottom of the pot/cup. So what I did was twirl my glass a bit to stir the spices each time I drank. Also, you can feel the texture of the spices. Neither of those things bothered me, but you can use fresh ginger juice and a stick of cinnamon if you want.
Try 1-2 teaspoons of ginger juice based on your liking, and at least 2 cinnamon sticks because 1 isn’t going to be enough.

- 10 oz Red Wine, dry or semi dry Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
- 1/4 t Truvia, ganulated
- 1/8 t Cinnamon
- 1/4 t Ginger
- 1 t Orange Zest (about half an orange)
- Combine all ingredients except the orange zest into a pot.
- Heat the pot on a medium to medium high heat. You want the liquid to simmer, not boil.
- Cook for 20 minutes or until you can no longer smell or taste the alcohol.
- For the best pop of flavor, add the orange zest at the end. Best served warm but also good cold.
