Can gestational diabetes be prevented?
There's no sure way to prevent gestational diabetes because some hormonal changes are completely out of your control.
But, you can lessen your chances of developing gestational diabetes by being mindful of your diet and exercise.
How do you prevent gestational diabetes?
Most of the risk factors are outside of your control, like age, ethnicity, past pregnancies, and family history, but here are four things you can do to help prevent developing gestational diabetes:
- eat a balanced diet with a focus on whole fruits (not juiced or peeled) and vegetables.
- This gives your diet plenty of health-ful, nutritious carbs with fiber.
- exercise regularly - even if it's walking in place during commercial breaks.
- Activity helps your blood sugar decrease more quickly than if you were to sit still.
- maintain a healthy weight.
- Your body works harder when it has extra, un-useful fat, and those more likely to develop diabetes are overweight with the bulk of extra weight being in their torso.
- drink plenty of water.
- Water helps flush the glucose out of your blood.
These are natural ways to help maintain steady and safe blood sugars, and they're also the first steps in treatment before prescribing medicine.
