A food and information blog for gestational diabetes
The big question on every newly diagnosed mind is "What can I eat with gestational diabetes?" The good news is that you can eat just about anything WITH variation. Here at The Gestational Diabetic we continually add to a library of gestational diabetes recipes - like desserts, Indian cuisine, no egg breakfasts, snacks and more - plus easy meal plans to keep you satisfied so you don't feel like you're missing out on anything! BONUS - we have tools to help you figure out how you can eat what you want without overhauling your diet, and how to eat out without stressing over carb counts.
The first thing you should know about gestational diabetes is that it's a carbohydrate intolerance, and that means that the more carbs you eat at once, or the worse carbs you eat (there are good and bad carbs), the higher your blood sugar will spike. That's exactly what you want to avoid. The goal is to keep your glucose levels as steady (within range) as possible.
If you haven't seen a specialist yet, you likely don't know what range your glucose levels should be in, or how many carbs you should eat. That's OK. In the meantime, until you see your nutritionist, check out common carb counts for each meal and learn more about the gestational diabetes diet. As for your glucose levels, almost always your doctor will want your fasting blood sugar to be 90 or below, your 1 hour post meal glucose at 130 or below, and your 2 hour post meal glucose at 120 or below.
The great thing is we've made finding recipes easy for you by indexing them by carb count and also by meal time. You can easily find what to eat by browsing this index.
If you don't want the hassle of figuring things out, try the done-for-you meal plans.
